Happy New Year Innovators!
I get excited leading up to a new year because it gives me a set time frame to reflect on the past year's achievements, short comings and experiences. It also allows me to focus and set newer goals that will help me improve as a human being and reach for my overall purpose in life. I also get excited to see other people have a renewed investment and enthusiasm on improving themselves. It is hard to see any thing that inspires people to improve as a negative. However, many people scoff about New Years, goal setting and resolutions. This is understandable, especially in the age of the internets noise of New Year, New You memes and the hoards of people publicly stating what they are going to do differently this year. However, part of the cynicism for these people may have to do with a disbelief in one's self to achieve whatever is of value to them due to repeated past failures. They would rather not set any real standards for themselves and therefore limit expectations and disappointment. This is no way to live and it limits personal growth! Yes, many people will have goals this year that will not be achieved. It is not enough to state a goal or resolution. You must actively move toward and plan steps to its achievement. Also, it is not always achieving the final goal that is most important. The lessons and character building traits that can be gathered along the way is what truly matters.
Hypothetically speaking, maybe a person has a 50 lb weight loss goal. But, in the process they lose 30 lbs, meet people that become life long friends along the way and they look as though they actually lost 50 lbs because they gained lean muscle. The journey to achieve that 30 lb lost also showed them how resilient they are. It also forced them to learn how to cook and meal prep. In short, if you don't set goals for yourself of any size at some point in the year you limit your personal growth and the rewards that may come as result of you pursuing those goals. The first of January just happens to be the date society has chosen. If it doesn't work for you choose February 9th or some other day that does.
The point is you must set and actively pursue those goals to become your best self!
